Given all the time I had to spare now that I’m awaiting ethics approval of my thesis proposal, I decided to use this time productively to learn how to use some programs designed to assist in the research writing process. The graduate studies website at the Univerisity of British Columbia (UBC) and my program course instructors recommend using a citation management program to assist with organizing your references and streamlining the citing process.

Doing a bit of quick reserarch, I found that there was only one program out of many (e.g.: Zotero, Mendely, RefWorks, Reference Manager) that suited Mac Pages users and that was EndNote. I downloaded the 30-day trial and played around with it for a couple days. Here is my account of my experience is EndNote X8 for users of Mac Pages and APA Style. I was determined to learn how to use this program. Upon first impression, it is a cumbersome program. These days, all apps that are downloaded for the first time have a welcome pop-up which prompts you to engage with their “tour” of the program, where brightly coloured windows will point you to the buttons you need to be oriented to in order to start using the program. Given such a non-intuitive, non-user friendly program such as EndNote, I am extremely disappointed that they didn’t bother thinking about adding this feature.

Endnote

Instead, the Thomas Reuters, the creator of EndNote created a 6 minute tutorial on YouTube which teaches you how to use EndNote for Mac. They tell you to specifically use a FireFox browser instead of Safari. Safari won’t be able to export the.RIS files you need to easily export the reference onto EndNote. There is still a way to export the.RIS file through a series of clicking which involves going into Finder, selecting the.RIS file and then selecting the application to open it with.

Initially, nothing will happen but if you double click on the.RIS file again from your desktop (or wherever the file is located) it will open in EndNote! I still recommend downloading and exporting.RIS files through Firefox because it takes waaaay too much clicking and switching between windows to making using Safari with EndNote worthwhile. I mean, the whole point is to make your life easier not to add many more cumbersome steps to your citing and referencing process. We’ve figured out how to get references onto EndNote. So how do we get EndNote to insert the in-text citation for you and create a References page on your Pages document? Well, I had to watch another YouTube video because the initial video I watched taught viewers how to get citations into Microsoft Word! Turns out, it’s pretty simple once you learn how to do it.

Make sure you have Page Version 6 or later because Version 5 won’t support it. Then, you go to Edit and make sure the tab that says EndNote Citations, you have selected the style you want. In my case, it’s APA 6th edition.

You can change the style at any time, I’ve found. Then you go to the end of your sentence and go to Insert and hit EndNote Citation, a window will pop up and then you can search the resource you want to insert and EndNote should be able to automatically get the information into the format you need and include the ‘(‘ and ‘)’ for you. It works well even when you have multiple sources under one set of brackets. With GREAT patience, I figured out how to get the program to cite a chapter in a book, rather than the whole book. You must right click ‘Edit Reference’ and select ‘Book Section’ in the reference type drop down bar at the top and enter the information in manually. Careful though! You must enter in Author names (and other information, most likely) in the formula that they want.

You don’t separate author names with comma, neither a semi-colon, nor a ‘&’ symbol. You must hit ENTER and write the next author in the following line. This is something they do not specify anything within the software program There was anothing thing I needed to test drive. I needed to cite the American Psychological Association, an oraganization as an author in my work.

In APA style, you can use an acronym (i.e.: APA) in a body of text if you are using those set of words more than three times. However, when there’s a new section, you should treat the new section like a separate document and write it out in full again (i.e.: American Psychological Association). So in my text, I wanted it to say “(APA, 2006)” but in the References, I wanted it to say “American Psychological Association (2006).”. There is no way to make this happen. It either that says “(APA, 2006)” with “APA (2006)” in the references, or it says (Association, 2006) with “Association, A.

(2006).” in the references. I can’t even manually enter this information because the EndNote created bibiography page won’t let me manually add references between the references they have generated for you. Overall: It takes SIGNIFICANTLY less time to use UBC Library’s built-in citation generator (or BibMe if the search engine you are using doesn’t have this feature) and copying and pasting the citation into your document than the time it takes to learn how to use EndNote.

It is not worth $150+. I wouldn’t even use it even if it was free. There are certain things that EndNote just isn’t able to do. Like spelling out an acronym the first time it appears in another a section and spelling out the name of the organization rather than putting it in the author format “Smith, J. Even if there was some convoluted way to make this work out, it isn’t worth the time. In the end, learning how to make EndNote properly spew out the things you need in the way you want them will take much more time than manually writing it yourself.

Final word: Don’t use EndNote. Just use an auto-citation generator and edit manually as needed.
