Freddy Krueger is easily one of the most recognizable movie monsters ever conceived, and a triumph of practical makeup effects. Now, a new documentary about the process of creating Freddy's iconic look is currently haunting the film festival circuit.Nightmares in the Makeup Chair explores the intricate design and application process required to bring a melted molester to life. This tribute film was mostly shot at Chicago's Flashback Weekend Horror Con in 2014 and features Robert Englund being transformed into the infamous Freddy by FX master Robert Kurtzman. The film aims to illuminate the arduous and absorbing elements that came together in a mix of latex, airbrushing, glue and infinite patience, and is filled with amusing anecdotes of Englund's years playing the wise-cracking wraith from the original A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) through Freddy vs. Jason (2003). And then the application process where I sit in the makeup chair and I become their living canvas as they glue me in and paint the appliances. This documentary not only captures their talent, but I think it might inspire a new generation of practical effects artists.
